The Association Claude et Felix Lanzmann and the Jewish Museum Berlin announce the inclusion of Claude Lanzmann's film-monument Shoah (1985) in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
Guillaume Ribot has directed a gripping anddefiantly categorised film that chronicles the making of Shoah, drawing on the 220 hours of Shoah’s raw footage and Claude Lanzmann’s memoir The Patagonian Hare (Gallimard, 2009). In 92 extraordinary minutes, he paints a portrait of a genius filmmaker at work: a strikingly handsome man in his fifties, intelligent, courageous, hard-working and resilient. AllI Had Was Nothingness – Shoah by Lanzmann is the flagship film of Claude Lanzmann’s Centenary, to be celebrated from 27 November 2025 to 26 November 2026.
Claude Lanzmann is a French Resistance fighter, journalist, writer, film director and producer. A committed intellectual and collaborator of Jean-Paul Sartre, he fought for Algerian independence whilst defending the State of Israel. He is the director of the landmark film Shoah, a seminal work that gave its name to the genocide of the Jews, described by Simone de Beauvoir as “an unparalleled alliance of horror and beauty”.
The Association Claude et Felix Lanzmann aims to preserve the memory of Claude Lanzmann, filmmaker, writer, director of the magazine Les Temps Modernes, intellectual leader committed to fighting colonialism and supporting Israel.
